Photographic Resolutions

With the new year, I've been giving some thought to what I'd like to work on this year photographically. Generally, there are three areas of interest for me. Less urgently, at least shooting wise, I'd like to continue to make pictures intended for my series now called Time Let Me Play. The portfolio itself feels largely resolved, but the kids are still young, and I love to watch them play. I'd like to fine tune it so that I can get it into a book form, and learn a bit about publishing. Secondly, I'd like to complete the prints for a small color portfolio I shot last summer with a Holga. Nice to take a bit of a breather gear wise, and shoot in a way that was far more loose than I had done with my older work.

Lastly, after doing a weekend workshop with 8"x10" cameras last spring, I've decided to take the plunge. A friend was interested in selling his beautiful Deardorff, so I've offered to take it off his hands, and give it a go. I expect this will be a far more deliberate process than I am used to, which has me a little nervous, but there is something seductive about looking through a ground glass, and the beautiful detail this medium renders. And I'd love to make platinum prints again...

Do keep us posted on the details, artistic and technical, as you proceed. I suspect there are quite a few if us who think about doing what you are. Thank you!

As a well know photographer once said, " when you step up to an 8 x 10, you are stepping up to the highest alter of photography". After an 8 x 10, every other camera becomes a toy. I used two ( Sinar & Deardorff )some years ago but clients finally balked at the price of 8 x 10 chromes and $ 12.00 a pop Polaroids. Too bad that the commercial photography mantra has become," good enough is always good enough".

For artistic photography it is a great medium. It will force you to be very careful as far as focusing goes and movement. Contact prints will replace your enlarger. Have fun!
